I agree with Tom's  comments on last night's Figaro.All sang well and
it was a pleasant production. The sight-lines were as bad as the
Ponnelle production, IMHO. The costumes were great.
The "Fleming-flappers and the Bartoli-brigade"  will be ectatic.
For me,though, Figaro is just not my favorite Mozart opera. I cannot
understand why the Met thought they needed a new production of it. Even
if they were wanting to mount a star vehicle for Fleming and/or Bartoli
they certainly could have come up with something a bit more interesting
than Figaro. Maybe it's just me, but I'm growing tired of the same old
operas,season after season. Why not Mignon for Bartoli?
Why not Armida for Fleming? At least we're getting Moses und Aaron this
season. At least there will be plenty of seats available for that one!
