Subject: "Longer than Parsifal"

text/plain (8 lines)

William Olvis adapted this quip when describing the 1959 Met crack at "The
Gypsy Baron" (which sank w/o trace). He and Lucine Amara were covering Sandor
Barinkay and Saffi on that occasion (Nicolai Gedda and Lisa Della Casa sang
the performances), and he recalled how Erich Leinsdorf kept interpolated this
bit of Strauss and that, particularly to the first act--long enough to begin
with--to the point that "it was longer than the first act of 'Parsifal' but
not quite as funny," which drew a big roar of laughter from the audience at
Los Angeles' Wilshire Ebell Theater.
