Subject: The Three Tenors/ Favorite moments

My dear list,

Just to clear things up:

I hope it came across in my last post that it's not The Three Tenors
themselves, but the commercialism and hype that I'm sick of.  After reading
the rave reviews of Paris '98, as well as reviewing my posting, I was worried
that someone might think I was putting down Carreras, Domingo, and Pavarotti
themselves.  I love them, I admire them, I respect them, I wish I were in
their shoes (as a soprano, of course)!  If they truly were as fantastic as the
multiple reviews make them out to be, then I'm delighted!

But I don't retract my position on the commercial aspects of their venture.

To change the subject, I'd like to pose a question to the list.  What is your
favorite operatic moment?  It doesn't have to be musical, in fact, it's
interesting if you try to discover what dramatic, as opposed to musical,
situations that attract you most.  Musically and dramatically, my favorite
opera moment is in Act Two of Nozze di Figaro, when Susanna steps out of the
Countess's closet in place of Cherubino.  "Signore, cos'e quel stupore?  Il
brando prendete, il paggio uccidete, quel paggio malnato vedetelo qua, quel
paggio malnato vedetelo qua!"  Musically, it's very pretty, but what I love
are the absolute irony of the situation, the words, and the role of the
underlying music.  Susanna's apparent piety and meekness are really her
musically jabbing the Count in the side and mocking him.  She know's she's
fooled him, she knows she has the upper hand in the situation, and she knows
that the Count knows this!  (whew)  I still break into a huge, foolish grin
every time I hear or see this, and I've watched Nozze more times than any
other opera!
