Dear Listers, Thurs July 9, 1998

I certainly disagree about Tokody's SFO BOHEME which I found
mediocre and am unfamiliar with her recorded SUOR ANGELICA
but feel much more secure recommending Scotto in one of her
great roles. Tokody is in her early 50's now and still sings
with the Hungarian National Opera. I saw her five years ago do
a smashing Eva in DIE MEISTERSIGER with Sandor Nagy as Sachs.

I don't read Hungarian but this performance was so vivid and
charming I shall never forget a promising Walter (extremely
good looking), Nagy's Sachs, the best of the 40 or so Davids
I have seen and heard--absolutely brilliant--and the surprise
at how wonderful Tokody was in her own language--the performance
was in Hungarian. After a brief flurry with an international
career that got nowhere she returned to her home house as a
star and is now an aging star.

She gets good assignments and records occasionally--she is in
a small role in the most recent recording of Liszt's St.

        Yours truly,

        Michael Barclay,D.Lett. OEI
