The new releases listed below are reviewed in the June issue of HARMONIE
(1) G.F. Handel
Daneman, Taylor, Thompson, Blaze, Robbin, Purves
Raglan Baroque Players, Nicholas Kraemer
Virgin Classics *Veritas* - 545 277-2 (3CDs)
NEW (STUDIO) RECORDING (1996)
Apparently, this recording is quite average and not memorable. There are
cuts. The reviewer (Ivan Alexander) calls for a reissue of the 1964
Westminster version with Stich-Randall and Forrester, never made available
(2) Claudio Monteverdi
Soloists, Capella Musicale de San Petronio, Bologna
Sergio Vartolo, cond.
Naxos (2CDs) 8.554 094-95
NEW (LIVE) RECORDING, 1996
They're not impressed with this one. Apparently, the production from which
this recording originated was visually stunning, but lacking in musical
values - something all too painfully obvious when only the audio aspect
remains. Perhaps that recording should have been released on video...
DIE ENTFUEHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL
Habermann, Ellen, Bezcala, Ringelhahn, Kalchmair, Pfeiffer
Chorus of the Regional Theater of Linz
Bruckner Orchestra of Linz, Martin Sieghart conc.
Arte Nova 74 321 49 49 701-2
NEW (STUDIO?) RECORDING (1996)
An honest, but unmemorable, and quite superfluous, recording - although
the reviewer (Andre Tubeuf) is quite pleased with the Belmonte
(Bezcala). A young man to watch, he says.
(4) Antonio Vivaldi
OTTONE IN VILLA
Gritton, Groop, Argenta, Padmore, Daneman
Collegium Musicum 90, Richard Hickox cond.
Chandos *Chaconne* 2 CD CHAN 0614 (2)
NEW (STUDIO) RECORDING (1996?)
While not being particularly impressed with the singing (except for
Daneman, whom he calls *young and fresh*), the reviewer regards it as the
better of the two available versions. Apparently, the continuo (cello and
harpsichord) is excellent...
That's all for the moment - but two other (more interesting) *First Time I
hear of* instalments will follow in the next few days.
