Subject: Dismal Ballo in Madrid

The national daily El Pais reviewed the new Ballo production in Madrid very
unfavourably, describing the cast as 'totally inadequate' and the musical
direction lacking in spirit and Verdian style. The conductor Garcia Navarro
was booed by the gallery, Ewa Poodles was described 'as suited to the role
of Ulrica as an elephant in a china shop, Joan Pons as 'tired and in vocal
difficulties'. The Oscar, Maria Jose Moreno was hailed as the saviour of
the evening, while the Riccardo, Alberto Cupido, was deemed not worthy of
mention. This failure of a production in which great hopes were placed is
likely to intensify the already widespread dissatisfaction been expressed
vis-a-vis the direction of this splendid theatre, and the lady minister of
culture is being forced to make statements defending the management.
