TEXT/PLAIN (23 lines)

An article in today's Sunday Times (London) reports that Chris
Smith, culture secretary of the British government, will recommend the
sell-off of Covent Garden to a <commercial leisure company>, thereby
breaking the priviliged position of the opera house and its opera and
ballet goers. Smith advocates a drastic reduction or the complete
elimination of public subsidy and is pushing for tax incentives for
business sponsors of the arts.
