Subject: ENO to abandon Coliseum

TEXT/PLAIN (31 lines)

According to an article in today's Sunday Times (of London), the
English National Opera will abandon its home at the Coliseum, much to the
disapproval of several arts organizations, and relocate to a reclaimed
industrial site next to Tower Bridge.

Rejecting plans for a 40m pound large auditorium of glass and
steel, the ENO has decided to go for a 120m pound "multi-arts" complex,
which would include two auditoriums, a theatre for dance and drama, an art
gallery, and restaurants. John Marks, the general director of the ENO,
said the new house would open in 2004, replacing the 1904-vintage
Coliseum which is unsafe and in poor condition. Unlike the Royal Opera
House, the ENO does not have extra land in which it can expand.

Much of the cost will be funded with a lottery, with an
architectural competition for the <Tower Opera House> to be held next
