Not to mention that one of the main literary themes of the original
Shakespeare was that the older Othello married a child-bride (as in Iago's
accusation to her father: "an old black ram/ Is tupping your white ewe.")

Not that the opera necessarily adheres to the play religiously, but I was
taught that the theme of age was nearly as present as that of race, betrayal,
purity, etc.
