text/plain (13 lines)

For those who haven't noticed it around, there's a new book out, THE NEW
GROVE BOOK OF OPERAS, Stanley Sadie, editor. It consists of articles on
264 operas culled from the NEW GROVE DICTIONARY OF OPERA, somewhat
shortened and simplified for a general audience (for instance, the
bibliographies have been omitted). There are no entries for composers or
singers, although the article on each opera often contains more information
about the singers involved in the premiere than that in the original Grove
Opera. At the end of the book are a glossary, and indexes by role names,
aria incipits, and composer. It is available from St. Martin's Press in
New York or Macmillan in London (ISBN is 0333651073), and costs an
affordable $30.00 hardcover in the U.S.
