Interesting, Max!
I heard the TABARRO of this Viennese production in the June 1980 Festwochen. Far and away the best evenings I ever spent with Zschau and Atlantov, both very well suited to their roles. Our Michele was Taddei, who had sung a *fantastic* Falstaff under Patane the night before ( Lorengar and Araiza also fantastic, Ludwig, Ghazarian and Milcheva good, Kerns OK but made no impact). Taddei was then 63 and a huge favorite in Vienna, when he had first appeared in 1946-- he got a thunderous ( and deserved) ovation after Michele's aria. I think his Michele the best male verismo performance I've ever seen. And Zschau and Atlantov were both very strong.

There=E2=80=99s a very good performance, different from others but still =
(I think) very convincing, on Orfeo d=E2=80=99Or from a 1979 Vienna =
State Opera staging in excellent stereo sound.

Some of the casting (particularly of =E2=80=9CSchicchi=E2=80=9D) =
doesn=E2=80=99t read off as idiomatic Italian, but the performance is =
full of life.

Gerd Albrecht conducts quite beautifully. I think few will complain =
about Pilar Lorengar=E2=80=99s Suor Angelica, with searing high notes, =
but the =E2=80=9CSchicchi=E2=80=9D with Walter Berry as Schicchi, Sona =
Ghazarian as Lauretta, Yordi Ramiro as Rinuccio and Margarita Lilova =
(once upon a time a superb Amneris/Fricka) as Zita surprises, =
positively. The =E2=80=9CTabarro=E2=80=9D is brooding and powerful with =
prime voiced Renato Bruson as Michele, Marilyn Zschau as Giorgetta =
(sorry, Kenneth, but that=E2=80=99s what it says in my copy of the =
score) and a very potent, powerful and studly sounding Vladimir Atlantov =
as Luigi.
