 Still and all, she did sing Zerbinetta, Sophie and Despina at San Francisco (1957-59) and Susanna and Amor at Lyric Opera of Chicago (1962).  Some of my Berkeley teachers had heard her SFO performances when they were grad students and said that -- as with Battle, Dobbs, Blegen and others-- her voice though small was very well focused and so  'carried" beyond their expectations.
Certainly some very gifted singers made no impact in the Met-- Gerard Souzay maybe the classic example.
