The report here (Chicago) was that Caballe arrived for Ariadne not knowing
the part at all. At the first run through with piano, Levine blew up and
told her that she had better learn it, and fast. So Caballe spent something
like two weeks intensively working with an accompanist to learn Ariadne.
(The source for this was the late Andrew Karzas, conversation with him in
1976 shortly after those Ariadnes.) Anyway, that might explain the problems
noted below with her Ariadne. Maybe someone closer to the facts can
corroborate or expand on this.

I've listened to the Ariadne on Sirius before and remember how at one
stretch Caball just sang the notes, and NONE of the words. She didn't even
try.

I was at this performance of Ariadne, sitting way up in the Family Circle,
as a poor student. I fell in love with Troyanos in this performance and
recall little of Caballe who barely moved on the stage and did not have much
of an opportunity to employ her famed pianissimi high notes. Of the later
Ariadnes in my opera going (Jessye Norman, Theresa Kubiak at the Met,
Leontyne Price and Deborah Voigt in SF, Cheryl Studer in Munich) Price was
surprisingly transcendent. I can still hear those majestic final soaring
high notes from the end of the opera, something her studio recording later
on failed to fully capture. I recall thinking Caballe did not really have
a firm handle on the role. It will be interesting to hear it again with
ears that are 40+ years older.

I have very little recollection of her Ariadne, but the other four
performances are, perhaps, the very best of Montserrat Caballe at the Met,
and outside of a very ordinary Justino Diaz in Vespri, her casts are
uniformly excellent.

For those who have Sirius, searching them out will be time very well spent.
