Last night’s Samson became a travail for Roberto Alagna. He worked hard with a forced leathery timbre right from the start. His effort at the climatic high B-flat, “je t’aime”, of the big duet was a hoarse shout. He is not the first to come to difficulty with that phrase but things did not improve. Latter A-flats and B-flats came to the same dismal result including his final note of the opera.
It is sad to hear him in such distress after an impressive, lengthy career of making wonderful music. I do not know if this is a temporary indisposition or simply the result of singing too much dramatic repertoire, but performances such as this do nothing for his reputation nor his rich legacy.
