Just announced: Lyric Opera of Chicago orchestra on strike.

For the first time in years, Lyric Opera of Chicago is facing a walkout.

The musicians of the Lyric Opera Orchestra, represented by the Chicago Federation of Musicians (CFM) Local 10-208, are on strike and picketing the Civic Opera House, on North Wacker Drive.

The musicians cite the company’s proposal to cut “the number of orchestra musicians by eliminating five positions”; cut the pay “of the remaining musicians by 8%”; cut the number of performances, “hand-in-hand with cutting the number of working weeks for the orchestra from 24 to 22,” according to a statement from the orchestra.

The action “may require Lyric to cancel performances,” according to a statement from Lyric Opera.

“Lyric simply cannot agree to the terms CFM demands, given our current financial circumstances. Or proposed changes are necessary to ensure Lyric’s survival as a world-class opera company providing a diverse range of cultural entertainment to communities throughout Chicago.”

The entire 1967 season was cancelled when management and union could not come to an agreement, according to a Lyric Opera representative.

This imbroglio comes just a day after Lyric Opera reached a multi-year labor agreement with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), which includes Stagehands Local 2, Wardrobe Local 769, Hair and Make-Up Local 476 and Treasurers and Ticket Sellers Local 750.

Wednesday afternoon’s dress rehearsal for Mozart’s “Idomeneo” has been cancelled, due to the strike. It remains to be seen if Saturday night’s opening of the production will take place.
