Mary Garden.....probably the biggest operatic star of the 20th c. who never sang at the Met.  She did sing a few seasons at the Manhattan Opera House and later at Chicago. I'm not sure if she was ever in negotiations to sing at the Met or not.

Not meaning to be contrary, but Bing approved many singers and disapproved others for reasons that couldn't be fathomed. Conductors too. Years passed, and some of them made it to the MET.
