Are you referring to List Hall? That's where the chorus does their musical preparation/rehearsal. Most of the rehearsal happens away from the main stage; mostly below it. The on-stage and final dress rehearsals do require the use of the stage and auditorium, but are scheduled earlier in the day during weekdays to avoid conflict with evening performances.

Actually, closing some Mondays and other weekdays could help with early evening dress rehearsals; as long as the unions are ok with that.

Several years ago when we were all discussing the problems of adding a
day to the Met schedule, one of the posters cited rehearsal time being
shortened as one of the main reasons why that would not be a good thing.
Did anyone ever consider still doing rehearsal time as usual but do them
next door in the Met theater (the venue you watch the performance on a
movie screen because you couldn't get back inside to see the rest of the
opera?)
