Ah, so you're saying it's not a two-way street then? I've always found it curious
that one may say whatever one wants, but it suddenly becomes "offensive"
whenever someone challenges or disagrees. I've always seen the list as a forum
to challenge differing opinions, to debate (even passionately, it is OPERA after all)
and, I can't count the number of times someone has changed my opinion on a
singer, composer, opera, director or myriad other things I disagreed with and/or
was ignorant about. The thing that drives me bonkers with so many on this list is
an inability to be flexible, to be vulnerable, as though there is some shame
attached to being wrong, or with the possibility of being enlightened by a differing
point of view.

I think I may not have been clear regarding "limited exposure," although 50 years
of listening does not in and of itself guarantee looking at things with an open
mind. My use of the term had to do with limited exposure to the singer in
question, and making up one's mind on that exposure without offering any other
reason to support or back up that decision. No, that backing up is not required,
but I was merely stating that by not doing so, the opinion means nothing to me.
That's on me.

As for your opinion that I am "out of place," you're hardly the first person in my
23+ years on this list to state this, and quite honestly, I've often wondered why
I'm still here myself, being, as I so frequently am, out of step with the majority of
you fine people.

As to the singer at hand, go on with your dislike (or however you wish to label it),
I was merely trying to answer YOUR original question as to how this "comprimario
gets contracts to sing" . . . and you didn't like the answer.

"Being all things operatic strictly subjective as they are, I find Mr.
Padillo’s comments about belittling and denigrating Mr. Vogt’s voice rather
peculiar. To question someone’s so-called prejudiced mind for
expressinganopinion is completely out of place, if not offensive. As it is, that's
what this forum is for, right? To express *subjective* opinions about opera.
Furthermore, I don’t think that someone with 50+ years of exposure to
opera, either through recordings or attending operatic performances, like
this writer, can be accused of “limited exposure.” As for the reviews of
Mr. Vogt’s performances, it’s been a long time that I’ve ceased to read
operatic reviews. Too much sugar and too little impartiality.
