There certainly were conductors, over the years, who led performances as
good as or better than Levine’s, but they appeared only occasionally. It is
difficult to imagine anyone else that good who would have devoted
practically his whole adult life to one company, elevated it to the extent
that he did, and expanded its repertory the extent that he did.
