Rudi, I think the context here is that Miss Zeani ( a gracious and fascinating conversationalist the times I've been lucky to speak with her, at Glimmerglass for DIALOGUES) left Romania at age 20 for Italy- so, after WW II. After King Michael overthrew the Fascist Antonescu regime in mid-1944, Romania was occupied by the Red Army and - as Russians and their allies will do- the Communist Party manipulated the election results and took over ( completely by 1946). Ceaucescu didn't come to power until 1965. Nowhere was it stated that she fled her homeland forever; obviously she went back some in the 60s and 70s to perform and to record TRAVIATA, TOSCA, etc. But she continued to live abroad as I understand it, in Italy and later the US, where she  taught for many years.
My parents found her outstanding in the Rome Opera's Rossini OTELLO at the Met in 1968.
Cheers - David

"fled the oppressive socialist regime"??

hmm you can hardly call Ceaucescu's regime 'socialist' though they may=20
have claimed the title......Remember Hitler and his thugs said they were=20
socialists too. Moreover I've always thought that Zeani was allowed to=20
study abroad from the regime?

Just my thoughts
