The Soviet Union, East Germans and other Soviet dominated regimes referred to themselves as socialist, probably just because it sounded good. In reality they were oppressive dictatorships dominated by the Soviets.  As for the Ceaucesscus, they were two of the vilest dictators of the time, therefore, I doubt they would have done anything to help a young soprano study in a foreign country.

hmm you can hardly call Ceaucescu's regime 'socialist' though they may
have claimed the title......Remember Hitler and his thugs said they were
socialists too. Moreover I've always thought that Zeani was allowed to
study abroad from the regime?
