This week Tufts U. in nearby Medford is presenting Figaro at the Granoff
Center. There are four performances only and I was at the opening on
Thursday. The Tufts Chamber Orchestra numbering 30 was situated behind
the singers but there was still enough space for the action to take place.
The staging was good, the costumes were variable, ranging from what
looked like a Nathan Detroit impersonation from the Count to a typical
attire for the Cherubino. The singers were inconsistent vocally but the best
of them was again the Cherubino, Kyra Link. Not only was she the best of
them in terms of voice and technique but she looked the part and
obviously loved doing it. All of them had the roles well in hand and the
Italian wasn't too bad, although occasionally some of them took a quick
breath in the middle of a word. This was the first time I had heard of any
opera being produced at Tufts which gives lots of free concerts of all types
during the school year.
