One of the more intriguing cases of a woman composer was a Lakota native American, Zitkala Sa ( Red Bird) Her missionary name was Gertrude Simmons Bonnin 1876 -1938. She took up the violin at the Boston Conservatory of Music, and wrote the first Native American Opera called Sundance. It was partially orchestrated by William F Hansen and meant to be a collaborative effort.  It was presented by the New York Light opera guild to critical acclaim. Unfortunately she did not receive any credit, maybe because she was a Native American woman, and Hansen got all the credit. It was the last straw, and she decided to change course and became an activist for Women's and Native American rights, and fought for their right to vote. She also went back to her reservation to teach children how to read, and wrote a book of native American stories to help keep the culture alive.
She was an interesting woman who deserved more than a foot note in history. Unfortunately, all that remains is a piano vocal score on microfilm at Brigham Young University under the name of Hansen. The orchestrated parts disappeared over time.
