I believe you are thinking of soprano Viorica Ursuleac (who sang a lot of the same repertoire 
as Reining did).  Ursuleac, along with her husband, conductor Clemens Krauss, were later 
criticized for performing a lot for Nazis, but privately they also incurred considerable personal 
risk in using their position and influence to help Jewish musicians and their families get out of 
Germany.
