The posts about Maria Reining remind me of her 1954 Rosenkavalier studio recording, one of my earliest complete operas. I still have it as a CD transfer. It’s been said by some that she was no longer in her prime but she sounds glorious to me. It’s an outstanding performance with a cast that’s a virtual who’s who of Austrian singers (and conductor) of the era. In addition to Reining, there’s the quintessential Viennese soprano, Hilde Güden, Ludwig Weber, Walter Berry, Hilde Rössl-Majdan (who sang about a million performances at the Staatsoper) and Anton Dermota (Slovenian, but mostly associated with Vienna) and conducted by Erich Kleiber. Recommended listening for all of us who rank Rosenkavalier among their top favorites.

There are also live versions from Salzburg in ’49 and ’53 and Arabella (studio) with Hotter and della Casa, conducted by Karl Böhm.
