I do agree that conductors need a grand design for a piece and it is tricky to make it work from individual singers. That would be a good argument for conductors to choose their singers. Time was when conductors chose their own singers. At present they are not generally in charge of casting. So we have to assume it is more challenging to put on a cohesive performance. Anyway, stuff comes up.

And it takes an excellent conductor on a great night to make it happen.

When it comes to chamber music, there are fewer people with whom to create ensemble.
