text/plain (20 lines)

Valenti Ferro writes that although Vinay arrived late at the Colon in 1958, when his voice was not at its best, he still had a remarkable ability to summon many colors to his creations, and his grasp of acting was greatly admired. He sang under Beecham as Otello and Samson, two of his greatest creations.

He arrived with a reputation of a great artist after his time first in Mexico where sang Di Luna, then Don Jose at City Opera and after at the Met. in New York.
In 1952 he went to Bayreuth where among other roles he did Tannhauser and Parsifal.

He says he neither had a voice of exceptional power nor extension but the variety of expressive colors he brought to his interpretations and his ability on stage was what made him a great artist, and those abilities lasted throughout his entire career.
