On Sills it is worth remembering that she said in interviews that she knew
she was forcing her instrument and shortening her career, but she wanted to
sing parts with more drama. Having heard her before the forcing started, I
would not hesitate to say she was a truly extraordinary singer, and when you
listen to the early recordings you realize she learned a coloratura
technique from Estelle Liebling that simply does not exist today, and for
whatever reason she didn't take the time or trouble to pass it on.

Also on Rysanek, I have always felt there was something you might call
"Rysanek pitch", and once you got used to it she didn't seem to be singing
out of tune at all.
