That Berlioz FAUST recording that Bob mentions is still my all-time
favorite, despite the mono sound. To my ears Munch and Poleri have been
unsurpassed. I can't say that I heard all recorded FAUSTs but I've heard
all better known ones because it's probably my favorite Berlioz
composition. Mine is also on Victor Gold paired with the same Debussy piece.

A couple of more recordings that I heard with Poleri: Beethoven's 9th,
again conducted by Munch, with Boston SO and L. Price, Forrester, and
Tozzi; and he was on the original recording of THE SAINT OF BLEECKER STREET.

I read more than once about the infamous incident in Chicago when, furious
about the conductor's (Rosenstock?) apparently slow tempi, he stormed off
the stage loudly cursing the conductor. It was right before the end of
CARMEN, leaving poor Carmen to finish the opera all by herself with an
impromptu suicide.

It's sad when such a temper damages what could arguably have been a major
tenor career.
