have a dvd of a stage performance of Land of Smiles . The lead tenor role is sung by an Asian tenor. and the production is not at all bad. I'm not sure where I got it, but I normally obtain things either from Premiere Opera or House of Opera

I often wonder the same thing, because I think LAND DES LACHELNS is Lehar's
most lovable score. The Konwitchny misrepresentation, a review of which I
had
not seen before. sounds like one of the worst examples of a European
appetite
for defacing works of art, as though their fathers and grandfathers had not
seen
enough of that on a rather more massive and deadly scale. But, if even so
innocent
a work as THE MIKADO has undergone suppression, what chance has this even
more explicit relic of an unfashionable genre? Perhaps a more musically
sensitive
adaptation that mitigates the racial stereotyping of such works is
conceivable, but
it might be a long wait. Meanwhile, I'd rather listen to the exquisite
recorded versions.
of which there is an abundance.
