For anyone who wants to hear Die Lustige Witwe the way it’s supposed to be performed, I recommend the c. 1960 recording with the incomparable Hilde Güden as Hannah. The role could have been written for her; she brings out the Gemütlichkeit and the mit Schlag character of the role like no one else.

Other great reasons for listening to this recording are the gorgeously sung Rosillon of Waldemar Kmentt and the officious / punctilious / humorous Njegus of Peter Preses. Conductor Robert Stolz leads a glorious performance of Lehar’s masterpiece.
