Once again, with deepest apologies to Clement Clarke Moore.

T’was the eve before New Years, and on Opera-L
Discussions had to an all time low fell,
Most posts were marked "Test" and they'd all but replaced,
The usual bickering, both caustic and base.

While back the Big House much fussing was made,
As Luc Bondy's Tosca to rest now was laid.
A new show to replace what some found too smelly,
As prayers went up, "make it like Zeffirelli!"

Yoncheva looked smashing in pre-prima press
Resplendent in jewels and at least one smashing dress.
Grigolo whose Romeo had been over the moon,
Would now take on Mario and face Scarpia's goons.
Lucic was predicted to chew up the scenery,
And get stabbed in the process for oh, so much meanery.
But no Zinka, Maria, or two-sized Renata
To sail through the high notes of Tosca's cantata.
As Maestro Villaume put his cast through their pace,
In a Tosca in Roma and not outer-space.

Then the grousing continues "Gelb's ruining the Met,
With his high cost productions and increasing debt."
T'is the fate each GM is obliged to endure
And will pass to the next guy, of this I am sure.

But just for a moment think a happier thought,
And be grateful for all the joy opera has brought,
As each one of us here, from wherever we hail
Toast the new year by raising a can, flute or Grail.

So to Twenty Eighteen let's each roar like a Leo,
"blah, blah, blah, O Scarpia avanti a Dio!

Happy New Year everyone!
