In re Villa-Lobos: not many people realize that he wrote a Broadway musical ( with an English language book).
"Magdalena"  played for 88 shows in 1948; noteworthy names among the cast were Irra Petina, Dorothy Sarnoff, Gerhard Pechner, John Raitt and dancer Matt Mattox. Jules Dassin directed, with Gwen Verdon as Assistant Choreographer to Jack Cole. ( This followed performances in Los Angeles and San Francisco.)

There were staged and concert revivals at Alice Tully Hall  (with Faith Esham, Judy Kaye, George Rose, Jerry Hadley  and Raitt as narrator and in a cameo singing part- this was recorded), in Boston, Wooster OH  and Australia about 30 years ago. There was a concert in Manaus in 2003, and the Theatre du Chatelet staged it in 2010. Frank, didn't you review the latter? Has anyone else seen/heard it?
Villa-Lobos also wrote a childrens' opera, "A Menina das Nuvens ("The Girl from 1he Clouds"), first given in Rio de Janiero in November 1960. The longtime Brazilian mezzo star Gloria Queiroz  created the Queen.
Cheers - David Shengold
