This is absolutely right and even though now, as reissues, these recordings all appear as “EMI,” HMV and Columbia were two very different units with different chains of command and different engineering teams. Up until 1964 Walter Legge was director of classical music for Columbia and, starting in 1956, Victor Olof had the same position for HMV for some years. Those two weren’t terribly friendly, Olof not feeling in any need of Legge’s “advice.”

Crossvers were relatively rare. One of them was having Legge serve as producer for the Furtwängler “Tristan” (Furtwängler was an HMV artist, Karajan worked for Columbia). Gobbi recorded for both.

As mentioned, the two different labels sometimes had different international partners. For a while UK Columbia recordings were released on the US Columbia label (early Karajan recordings) and HMV was partnered with US RCA, until they split and RCA partnered with Decca.
