Operas come to the stage many times unfinished. During a run there would be cuts made to tighten up the piece based on audience reaction, or new choices by the composer perhaps at the request of a singer. Perhaps a cast change would restructure the chemistry.
In the modern era when audience sit in halls and pay close attention certain sections would now become too boring.
In more recent times some cuts would be made to avoid orchestra overtime.
Then there came a moment in which every bloody note had to be played for the sake of authenticity.
This led to excesses such as two tenor arias sung in Don Giovanni. Really it should be one or the other.
The Messiah has many versions, and playing every musical number is boring, and has nothing to do with the original intention.

Und so weiter
