I found it odd that on Saturday afternoon's first international radio broadcast that Mr. Gelb was not there welcoming the radio audience as he usually does.  I guess he let Levine go on and conduct one last time, to avoid cancelling the performance.

Now, in light of this tragedy of Levine, he was probably huddled in his office with the Met's lawyers making last minute plans to avoid a big scandal, unavoidable though it was, but probably making sure that James Levine did not resign or quit.  Gelb always the self PR man, likely wanted the "Met company" to be the one suspending him and making that headline stand out over all else, a bit of his own face-saving and for the company too.  The board also probably had a hand in this.Although they should take matters further and now use this chance to remove Gelb as well.
We will probably never know this, but did Levine know in advance was about to exploded by the media?  Did he know that last Saturday's performance of the Verdi Requiem would be his last ever?
