Second post of the day. The Bachtrack review has noted an underlying theme 
missed by the banal Kosman: the settlement of California by whites was not really 
like it seems in John Wayne movies. While it is only touched on in the opera, this is 
from Wikipedia:

"The California Genocide was the decrease in the indigenous population of 
California due to ... Under US sovereignty, after 1848, the Indian population 
plunged from perhaps 150,000 to 30,000 in 1870 and reached its nadir of 16,000 
in 1900."

Yes, they did use the word "genocide" for a period of the history of my home state.
