Subject: Danger for the Arts

The tax plan working its way through the legislative process could be a disaster for 
performing arts in America. To remind all, ticket revenue is only a part of the opera 
budget. In the UK and Europe, major support is given by the government. This is 
not the case in the US where they give a generous tax deduction to contributors 
who donate money to the non-profit arts. These donations are a third (or more) of 
any annual budget of US symphonies or operas.

Proposals in the drafts floating around Capitol Hill have major cuts in the 
deductions and national support groups see any cuts as causing an immediate and 
dangerous hit to the bottom line of any opera company.
