Le vaisseau fantome by Dietsch was written on the same libretto as Der fliegende Holländer

Enrico Caruso made his professional debut in an opera "L'amico
Francesco" by one Mario Morelli. The same subject would surface later,
with more success in "L'amico Fritz."

Another composer, Domenico Monleone, submitted a Cavalleria Rusticana in
the Sonzogno competition in 1907. By this time Mascagni's opera was one
of the most popular in the repertoire, and one wonders what on earth he
was thinking of! He didn't win the prize, but it had a successful tour
throughoput Europe. Sonzogno took him to court and had it banned from
being performed in Italy. Evidently he withdrew it and rewrote it as a
totally different subject.

Salieri wrote a Falstaff, and of course there are also Nicolai's Lustige
Weiber von Windsor" and Vaughn Williams "At the boar's head." Nicolai's
opera is very good, and closest in action to Verdi's.

There there is "Hans Sachs" by Lortzing, which shares a lot of details
with Wagner's opera, but of course can't stand the comparsion. On its
own merits however it is, like all of Lortzing's operas, very good,
well-crafted, with good, if not unforgettable, music.

David
