I found him to be a purist who separated hagiography from sensible criticism. He had an extremely refined bullshit detector. His critical judgements were astute, and he was angered by those who spoke from anything less than
Balanced, truth assessments of artists and works. It made me happy to  read what he had to say, because he had artistic integrity.
