Humiliation is in the eyes and sensibility of the beholder. Bette Midler
got her start at the Continental Baths, which was quite a well kept place,
and she's still riding high.

More to the point, Steber had every right to do what she wanted to do. She
had her reasons.

There was a very poignant, end-of-life interview with Steber that ran in
Opera News around the time of her death. If memory serves me - that was a
long time ago - she spoke about getting ready to go in for an operation,
and shared her fears about making it through. She didn't. On some level,
she may have known the end was at hand.
