Balancing artistic egos used at least to be part of running an opera house.
When Corelli arrived at the Met, del Monaco promptly left. Sills' late
debut was due to Sutherland. The Met had Hines, Siepi, Ghiaurov, Tozzi,
and, I think, the young Ramey during Treigle's career.

And as for Sills and Treigle, she also reports a performance they were in
together ('Mefistofele'?) where he was so over the top upstaging everybody
that she told him afterwards she would give him one performance like that,
but he had better not try it again.
