Here's a hint that works pretty well for me.  If you want to see a certain 
action taking place, like the Poker Scene in Fanciulla, or Carmen being 
stabbed, you'd do better to get a seat in the orchestra on the OPPOSITE 
side from the action instead of being on top of it for a better visual. 
So in these cases above you would try for seats on the left of center 
because almost always the script seems to call for those actions on the 
right.  Mimi's bed is usually set up more on the left side so you'd want to 
be on the right. (Of course with the new stagings, who knows?  Could be 
hanging from the rafters).  

If you're short, like me, you have an extra added problem of praying that 
the one who sits in front of you isn't some mammoth, otherwise I end up 
doing the "tennis watching bit".
