Mr. Craig replaced Jon Vickers in the Lyric Opera of Chicago OTELLO in 1966.  That was an interesting story.  Vickers quite literally disappeared from view without notifying anyone: no call to the rehearsal department, nothing. The excuse given later was that he had experienced a painful outbreak of "shingles" on his vocal cords.
Craig left London at once and got to Chicago in time to sing the dress rehearsal.  I was very busy with production (Pizzi's set featured a high walkway with no guard rails, and the supers required to walk on it -- in the dark -- were terrified; there were lots of extras and marshalling them from the fifth floor to the stage and getting them in position left little time to listen) but what I did hear was creditable if not inspiring.
Domingo did not appear with LOC until the MANON LESCAUT of 1968.

Over on the Parterre Box site there is a discussion about Sutherland and
Charles Craig.  It states that Craig sang Otello at Chgo Lyric in 1966, most
likely replacing Domingo and did not appear before then or after then in
the U.S. Actually he sang Arturo in Puritani in Boston with Sutherland in
February of 1964.  Perhaps as a trial run for their Puritanis at CG in 1965.
He was definitely not at ease as Arturo and appeared sometimes to be on
the verge of disaster, at least as I saw it.  At any rate he seemed to be
happier on home ground where he had a most distinguished career.
