It doesn't really qualify as either a "sigh" or
a "gasp", but it's hard to forget the Canadian
Opera Company's production (late 80s? sometime
in the 90s?) of Dialogues des Carmélites, where
the end of the last act was so overpowering that
everybody simply sat in stunned silence for many
minutes (I didn't time it, but it lasted quite a
while) before the applause began.
