Forsooth Opera Lovers!

Today we can celebrate the birthdays of:

Kim Borg (1919-2000)
Aleksandra Kurzak (1977)
Gail Robinson (1946-2008)

Also, Boieldieu's "Abderkhan"and Von Suppe's "Das Madchen vom Lande"
premiered on this date in 1804 and 1847, respectively.

Let us remember Alfredo Catalani (1854-1893) and Christina Deutekom
(1931-2014) who joined Heaven's Choir on this date.

The quote for today is taken from an interview by Bruce Duffie in
October 1986 with Christina Deutekom:

BD: Tell me the differences in the vocal line between the bel canto
operas of Bellini and Donizetti and the early Verdi operas.

CD: The bel canto is the more difficult thing because you must be a good
singer.  You must really know what to do with your breath.  Singing is
all working with the breath, and you really must know and have a good
technique.  For me it’s harder to sing Lieder; I think that’s the most
difficult thing to do.

VINTAGE ICON MOVIE DEBUTS: On this date in 1942 The Bowery Boys (AKA
East Side Kids) debuted in the film SMART ALECKS with Leo Gorcey, Huntz
Hall and Bobby Jordan.

As always, a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our birthday artists for today and
