Conlon would have been the logical choice for the Met. In France, most everyone
acknowledged that he built the Paris Opera orchestra into probably the finest
orchestra in France and put Paris at the top of the operatic ranks. He has been
associated with the Met all of his life and has no interest in a "touring" career
(Levine preferred that too). LA now has two of the great podium masters of our
time with Dudamel at Disney Hall.

The Paris Opera continued the tradition of top conductors by snagging Philippe
Jordan ("one of the few conductors of note who focused on opera from the start of
their artistic career"). He is today conducting Meistersinger in Bayreuth. His
contract at the Paris Opera concludes in 2021 and he is already starting to plan
2020 at the VSO where he will be GMD following the likes of Mahler, Strauss,
Karajan, Abbado, Boehm, etc. He is already planning for the 2019 LePage Ring
revival at the Met "Even Peter Gelb is clear that things have to be changed and I've
made a list and given some suggestions. Revivals give you the chance to make
things better." (from the February NY Times article about Jordan.)

Remember that the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic are a single
pool of musicians (whose agreement for a GMD appointment would be necessary)
so Jordan is now a critical part of that. He will presumably not continue his job as
MD of the city's second orchestra, the Vienna Symphony, when his contract expires
in 2021 but who knows.

Lissner in Paris is currently looking for the next wunderkind. Maybe Conlon again?
Any suggestions?
