I recently returned from the Leipzig Ring which had one singer for the Wanderer and Walkure Wotan,  and a younger artist for the Rheingold Wotan / Gunther. Both gentlemen were wonderful.

It's likely that the offer from Bayreuth came while the singer(s) was still learning the full role. Rather than lose a good artist, the theater split the role. Back in the early '60s, there was a lot of Wotan sharing - among the likes of Jerome Hines, Hans Hotter, James Milligan, Otto Wiener and Theo Adam. The production was new in 2013, the 200th anniversary of Wagner's birth.Jim BodgeOn 7/30/2017 4:16 PM, E J Michel wrote:>> Just curious if anyone knows why?>> I have enjoyed Wolfgang Koch in the past ... he hasnt sung it since 2015> (wasnt that the debut of this production)>> 2016 had Paterson for Rheingold and Lundgren did the other two.> this year we have three.>> curious...>>> Best regards,> Elizabeth>> E J Michel> ===============> [log in to unmask]>>-- James BodgeYou only need two things: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If something moves and it shouldn't, use the Duct Tape. If it won't move and it should, use the WD-40.**********************************************OPERA-L on Facebook:http://www.facebook.com/groups/25703098721/--------------------------------------------------------------------------To UNSUBSCRIBE, send a message to [log in to unmask] only the words: SIGNOFF OPERA-L--------------------------------------------------------------------------To stay subscribed but TURN OFF mail, send a message [log in to unmask] containing only the words: SET OPERA-L NOMAIL--------------------------------------------------------------------------Modify your settings: http://listserv.bccls.org/archives/opera-l.html--------------------------------------------------------------------------
