My impression was that Melisande knew where the ring was and was roping in Pelleas, just 
one more thread in the web.  I think Melisande is passive/agressive, co-dependant.  She 
played her husband to get him to take her in, then played Pelleas because she needed more 
sexual attention.  NOW all this could be totally unconscious behavior, that she would deny. 
But she also was a habitual risk taker.  She knew that playing with the ring by the pool 
(symbolic) was inherently dangerous but persisted until it was lost, then reeled in Pelleas into 
the problem.  SHE is faking subsequent searches because she KNOWS where the ring is, but 
not him.  At least that's my take.
