An opera I had forgotten to mention in an earlier thread was "Claude" of Thierry
Escaich. First performed in Lyon in 2013, it is from a short story by Hugo which
portrays a worker, displaced by mechanization, who resorted to crime and was
jailed. Powerful but anguished, he was touched by a young and frail cellmate who
would write his letters to his wife (he was illiterate) and offer him part of his bread.
He falls in love with the young man and is hurt when the prison governor
deliberately transfers the youth to another part of the prison. He eventually kills
the governor and the final scene is before the guillotine. The libretto is by Robert
Badinter, a politician and activist who successfully sponsored legislation which
eliminated the death penalty in France in 1981.
